Worrying about whether a parent or grandparent is being looked after properly is one of the hardest things a family can go through. You suspect a carer isn’t being honest, or there’s someone new in their life you don’t trust, or you just have a feeling something’s not right — and most people don’t know where to even start.
I’ve been doing this work for a long time, and what I can tell you is this: you’re not being paranoid, and you’re not alone in feeling helpless about it. At Adley Barton, I investigate exactly these situations — quietly, carefully, and properly — so you get a clear picture of what’s actually going on, not just a guess.
This page explains what I look into, how I go about it, and what you can expect if you come to me.

What We Investigate
Elder abuse doesn’t always look the way people expect, and most families who call me aren’t even sure what they’re dealing with yet. Here’s what comes up most often in my work:
Money going missing or being taken
A carer, a “friend,” a new partner, even a family member — someone who’s getting their hands on an elderly person’s money, handling their finances without permission, pushing them into transactions they don’t fully understand, or benefiting from the relationship in ways that don’t sit right.
A carer you don’t trust
Whether it’s a paid carer or someone informal, I look into cases where the standard of care seems off, where something about their honesty doesn’t add up, or where they seem to be getting too close in a way that crosses a line.
Romance scams
I’ve seen this more times than I’d like — an older person forms a relationship online with someone who isn’t who they claim to be, and money starts changing hands. Sometimes it’s already significant by the time the family finds out.
Property and money decisions that don’t add up
An elderly person suddenly changes their will, transfers a property, or makes a big financial decision in circumstances that suggest someone’s pushed them into it, or that they may not have had the capacity to make that choice freely.
Worries about a care home
Families come to me concerned about how a resident is being treated — physical handling, medication, food, or just a general sense that something isn’t right. We offer Care Home Investigations across the UK.
Coercive control
This is one of the more difficult things to spot from the outside. It’s when someone — a carer, a new partner, even a relative — starts making decisions for an elderly person, limiting who they see, and slowly cutting them off from the people who’d otherwise notice something was wrong.

How We Work
Every case starts with a conversation. I listen to what’s worrying you, ask about the specifics, and I’ll tell you honestly what I think an investigation can and can’t establish — I’m not going to take your money for something I don’t think will help.
Throughout the whole process, I keep the elderly person at the centre of everything I do. They’re not someone I’m investigating — they’re the person whose welfare actually matters here. I gather evidence carefully, without alarming them, and without tipping off anyone who might be taking advantage of them.
Surveillance
If the concern is about something specific — how a carer behaves, a visitor who shouldn’t be there, what’s happening at the house — I can observe and document it properly. This gives you solid, factual evidence of what’s actually happening, rather than relying on what someone tells you secondhand.
Background checks
If there’s a specific person involved — a new carer, a new partner, someone claiming to be a close friend — I can look into who they actually are: their history, their background, and anything in the public record that’s relevant to their place in your relative’s life.
Following the money
If financial abuse is the concern, I can help identify suspicious patterns in transactions, trace where money has gone, and put together the kind of evidence solicitors, banks, and the authorities will need to act on.
A welfare visit
Sometimes what a family really needs isn’t a full investigation — it’s just someone checking in. I can visit the elderly person at home or in their care setting under a suitable reason, see how they’re really doing, and report back to you directly.
Working With Other Agencies
We know that cases like this often need more than just me — the police, adult social care, the CQC, solicitors, the Office of the Public Guardian might all need to get involved at some point. I build my investigations to produce evidence that those bodies can actually act on, and I’m happy to work alongside them or hand over findings in whatever form they need.
If at any point I believe someone is at immediate risk, I won’t sit on that. I’ll talk to you straight away about getting the right people involved without delay.

Elderly Protection Investigation FAQs
Can you investigate without them finding out?
In most cases, yes. I work quietly and carefully, and I take real care not to upset or alarm the person at the centre of the concern. I’ll talk you through exactly how I’d approach your specific situation before anything starts.
What if it’s a family member I’m worried about?
Some of the hardest cases I deal with involve a relative, not a stranger. I investigate those the same way I investigate anyone else — properly, and without taking sides. The elderly person’s welfare comes first, whoever the evidence points to.
What happens if you find something serious?
If I find evidence of a crime — theft, fraud, assault, neglect — I’ll tell you straight away and talk you through the right next steps, which usually means involving the police and adult social care. I can put together evidence and statements in a form that’s usable for those proceedings.
Will you look into a care home?
Yes. Whether it’s about one member of staff, the general standard of care, or how a specific resident is being treated, I’ll investigate it properly and with the sensitivity these situations deserve.
